If you’re a professional, protect yourself from financial loss, injury or damage following a mistake, or failure to exercise the required level of skill. It’s important to remember that you may be held to be liable for a mistake even though there was no negligence.

Who is a Professional?

Anyone who provides advice and/or services of a skilful nature, according to an established discipline, can be regarded as a ‘professional’ in a legal sense.

Standard public/products liability cover will generally include cover in respect of advice given in conjunction with your product where there is “no fee for service” charged.

However, once you provide advice and a separate “fee for service” is charged there would be no cover.

An example could be: you’re asked to provide an expert opinion on a horticultural issue and to give a written report and for this you charge a fee.
